EQUIPMENT

Both sites of Aerostructure Division of Héroux-Devtek operate modern CNC machines. Following are the main equipment of our two facilities: Dorval Plant and Arlington Plant.

  • Dorval Plant

    Makino Mag 3
The most recent acquisition of the Dorval facility, a Makino Mag 3 machine, is one of the most efficient machine available today. With a 30,000 rpm spindle, it is truly a high speed machine. But it does also beat competition with its five-axis capabilities. This machine has a continuous rotation on C axis and a +/- 110 degrees on B axis. Finally, with a dual pallet changer, this machine can operate continuously for optimum productivity.

    Six Cincinnati machines
The Dorval plant operates a total of six Cincinnati machines. Three of them are large gantries. The three machines are five-axis high speed machine. The Cincinnati 2 and 3 are mounted on the continuous table, therefore allowing up to 200 feet long machining capabilities.

Three five-axis Line machine
The Dorval plant operates three Line machines. All three machines have extended five-axis capabilities. With B and C rotation axis respectively of up to +/- 110 degrees and +/- 200 degrees, they have exceptional capabilities allowing machining vertically and horizontally on same set-up which greatly reduces cycle time. The newest Line machine added at the Dorval plant does have 3 spindles and a bed length of 60 feet. With these features, the Line's are ideally suited for large complex five-axis monolithic components.

CMM
To validate dimensions, the Dorval plant rely on a Zeiss CMM with two heads. The CMM can measure parts up to 256 inches long by 108 inches wide and 96 inches in height. The 3D control software is Metrolog XG.

The Dorval plant also operates several other CNC machines.

  • Arlington Plant: Progressive
Shown below are some of the machines that Progressive uses in manufacturing process.

    High-speed Machines
Two new SNK machines were added at Progressive in 2004. These two machines have three spindles each, five-axis with 180 tool changer capable of achieving spindle speeds of 12,000 RPM. The machines can handle parts of up to 288 inches long by 192 inches wide.

Pictured below are four of Progressive Inc.'s machine ; the SNK HPS-4B. As an innovation to aluminum part machining, the high-speeds cut on a vertical surface instead of a horizontal table.

    Gantry Machines
All four machines utilize the same table, allowing for longer travel limits. Each machine is equipped with three spindles and a 20 tool auto-changer. This allows for shorter machining time by producing multiple parts in one run, and cutting down on operator intervention for tool changes.

Progressive Inc. maintains two types of gantries on the table. The most notable difference between them is the spacing of the centers. Of the four machines, two are 40" centers and the remaining two are 54" centers. Each set also has differing travel limits due to the center spacing.

    CMM Machines
Our CMM machines allow us to automate our part checking process. A master program is written for each part the first time it passes through our inspection department. Using this program, subsequent parts can simply be loaded onto the check tables, aligned according to the original template, and then checked via the CMM. Once the program gets underway, the inspector is free to accomplish other tasks thus increasing his productivity. After the program finishes, a report of the points checked is sent to a printer and the newly collected data is combined with a historical database to produce SPC data.

The picture above shows our entire inspection area. Both CMM machines used by Progressive are contained in a 68 deg F (+/- 1 deg), climate controlled room to minimize expansion/contraction in the granite blocks used by the machines. Pictured below are the individual machines along with their pertinent information.
